House panel members grill officials on GO 610

HYDERABAD: Officials drew flak at a meeting of House Committee on implementation and monitoring of GO 610 as legislators grilled them and expressed strong displeasure over the contradictory information provided to them. Cutting across party lines, members at the three-hour meeting held under the chairmanship of N. Uttam Kumar Reddy (Congress) on Wednesday expressed reservations on whether the GO would be implemented in all departments by the June-end deadline. Chief Secretary J. Harinarayan and Principal Secretary, School Education, C. B. S. Venkata Ramana, were among the senior officials present.Mr. Reddy directed the Education Department to make GO 610 also applicable to all aided educational institutions and the Housing Corporation. He told reporters later that the notification on transfers in the District Institutes of Educational Training (DIETs) and that of deputy educational officers under Zone 7 would be withdrawn.

Relay for Life emphasizes screening for colon cancer

BY HOWARD BUCK Columbain staff writer

Long overshadowed as a killer of men and women in the U.S., colon cancer gained new respect at the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life, west Clark County edition. There were several hundred blue glow-sticks that lit up the Columbia River High School track late Saturday — a gift to each fundraiser participant who signed a pledge to seek colon screening or to persuade someone else 50 or older to do so. Hours earlier, a bright red, pear-shaped "Polyp Man" and a hot-pink fabric colon display had to make do. "Colon cancer, and colons in general, are kind of an embarrassing topic. People are kind of quiet about it," said Libby Mongue, a six-year Hodgkin’s Disease survivor and devoted anti-cancer activist. It was her job to entice the families, friends and other teams circling the track to check an informative display and vow to pay attention.

Study Suggests High-Dose Fish Oil May Significantly Improve ...

DANVERS, Mass., Aug 07, 2007 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The results of a pilot study published in the Nutrition Journal ( www.nutritionj.com) suggest that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can benefit from daily supplementation of high levels of purified fish oils. The eight-week study demonstrated that children who consumed between 8 and 16 grams per day of EPA and DHA (the long chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil) showed significant improvements in their behavior rated by both their parents and the psychiatrist working with them.

The study monitored the ratio of two fatty acids in the blood: arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It has been known from previous studies that children with ADHD have a high AA/EPA ratio in the blood compared to control children.

Worried about the crash?

It asks some hard questions about the nature of today's global economic structure, and does so in a clever and thought-provoking way. One of my takeaways was the treatment of savings, which gives a good indication of how Schiff thinks. His argument that ‘home equity and stock market appreciation are not savings' will fill people with dread, for sure, as they are coming true right now. Schiff points out that savings used to be an indicator of a genuine buffer zone for hard times. They were the difference between earning money and spending it. So they were a function of all those unfashionable qualities (at least in recent years) such as deferred gratification, thrift and self-discipline. In short, savings had a value of blood and sweat which home equity and stocks can't match. .

Don't batter your taste buds

FISH is the perfect foodstuff: tasty, versatile and nutritious, yet for many Scots it is best served battered, seasoned with salt and sauce and wrapped in paper.

But while everyone loves a fish supper, it's worth stepping out of your comfort zone every now and then to try something new.

Iain Young, head chef at Sygn on Charlotte Lane in the West End, believes fish should make regular appearances in our diet.

“Scottish seafood is the best in the world," he says. “I love cooking with fish. It's slightly harder to cook than meat but it is worth it as it is more delicate and subtle."

There are many different kinds of fish to consider: tuna, trout, monkfish, sea bass, salmon or mackerel to name but a few.

And any of these options can be grilled, poached, baked, seared or used to add flavour and colour to salads.
