Welcome back, drive-in experience

WHEN I REPORTED ITS DEATH, so many of you wrote to me of all the fond memories you had of it from years past. We drove by the skeleton that was left by the side of Highway 4 and wished it well in its demise but secretly hoped that someone could save it. It would seem we were not alone in our feelings of great loss. The people of the East Bay protested so much that the owners decided to revive our last dinosaur, and the Solano Drive-In lives again.

They have fixed the potholes, revamped the snack shack and pumped much-needed blood into the veins of the camera room, and our dinosaur is alive and well once again. Opening night offered movies to full lots of cars for both screens as loyal fans showed their appreciation for the revival.

Once again the movie section of the Contra Costa Times has a listing for drive-ins.

Hit your peak with these super foods

Skip the aspirin and instead have a giant helping of spicy curry? Forget your blood pressure meds and sip another cup of green tea? Give up cholesterol-lowering statins and try a handful of almonds or walnuts?

Could good health and reduced risk of disease really be as easy as eating some super nutritious foods few nutritionists would ever guarantee that super foods will make you super healthy, most agree that edible superstars will give your body many of the nutrients it requires to operate at peak performance.

"More and more, what we see is that what we eat and do not eat is becoming the central front in (determining) whether we (are in) a state of optimum health," says Dr. David Leopold, family practitioner and integrative medicine specialist at the Scripps Center of Integrative Medicine in San Diego.

On The Up-And-Up

The transition from track shorts to a business suit "has been pretty smooth," Buciarski said, "but it was hard to let go (as a competitor)."

No doubt.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, and the son of Wojciech Buciarski, the fifth-place finisher in the pole vault at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Piotrek Buciarski began taking the event seriously at age 15.

By the time he was 20 years old, he had cleared 18 feet. Just five vaulters in the storied history of Oregon track and field have reached or surpassed that height.

A visit to Eugene in 1996 for a session with then-UO vault coach Andrezi Krzesinski led to a Duck scholarship offer. The rest is history. He remains a Eugene resident, though his work visa expires in August 2008.

"During my years with the Ducks, I improved my PR by just two inches," Buciarski said.

- Boston has announced that Curt Schilling will make his first start in nearly six weeks in the series finale Sunday at Safeco Field instead of Josh Beckett. Schilling has a 6-4 record and 4.20 earned-run average.
